Taking from the Till

One of the most common offences by employees in retail is the unlawful appropriation of cash. In smaller stores where transactions may be manually entered, an employee can reduce the recorded amount while charging the customer the full price, pocketing the difference later. Alternatively, the employee might simply take cash and blame a “mistake in change.” Occasionally, even supervisors or store managers exploit opportunities during the day to remove cash, later claiming counting errors.

Advanced Methods of Cash Theft

The perpetrators’ methods are far more sophisticated in medium or large businesses where items are scanned at the checkout. Experienced cashiers know countless ways to manipulate the till. Two examples — Option one: the employee works with an accomplice. The accomplice appears as a normal customer and presents the goods for scanning, but the cashier fails to scan all items. Depending on the goods, they are later sold on the internet or to fences and the two perpetrators share the proceeds. Option two: the cashier keeps the receipt or prints a copy and cancels the transaction or individual items using the receipt number. The excess cash generated by the cancellation is then taken from the till.
